Cuts visible on shingles at the left front of the roof

Close-up of architectural shingles on a roof showing visible cuts or slices across the shingle surface

What we found

At the left front area of the roof, the architectural shingles — the thick, layered shingles with a dimensional look — showed what appeared to be cuts or slices across their surface.

Why it happens here

Architectural shingles work by layering a fiberglass mat and asphalt coating to form a continuous surface that sheds rainwater away from the roof deck, the structural boards beneath. A cut or breach through that surface creates an opening where water can bypass the shingle and reach the layers below.

What it means for you

The affected shingles in that section are not fully intact, which means that area of the roof is not shedding water the way an undamaged shingle would.

What to do

Have a qualified roofing contractor look at the cut shingles, assess the extent of the damage, and repair the area to restore the roof's weatherproof surface.

How common is this

Localized shingle damage is something inspectors routinely look for and report, and targeted shingle repair is a standard scope of work for roofing contractors.

A roofing contractor can tell you exactly what the repair involves after taking a closer look at the affected area.
